Alise felt like everyone was watching her. She was positive she was beet red and kept her eyes on her lap, sneaking glances out from under her long lashes every so often to see what was going on around her. Before she had been invisible to most and had sat on the stairs to observe, feeling that she didn’t belong here. Now it felt strange to be sitting at a table, people all around and getting curious looks from a few of the customers. Patti was at the bar with Monty, and while Monty was smiling at her, Patti’s expressions kept changing but she was someone who never could see Alise as a ghost. Alise was still touching everything she came in contact with, she ran her hands over the table, let a finger slowly inch its way up the candle, and watches as the hot wax dribbles down her fingers. Her finger gets too close to the flame making her jump and she giggles as she pulls her hand away.
Stoney is mesmerized watching her, especially the finger on its slow path up the candle. He forces the thoughts back, Not now..
Monty brings her a glass of Beaujolais, making Alise gasp in surprise and smile..”How did he know? And when did he change? And why is he looking so embarrassed at me?” Have I done something wrong?" She feels the side of the wine glass, watching the moisture collect on a finger, enjoying how cold it feels after the hot flame of the candle. She lifts the glass and smells…. “mmmm.....”
Stoney laughs, “Taste it, Chaton..”
Alise sets the glass down, “I am afraid I will drink it one big swallow and look like a pig.” She laughs but picks the glass up again, determined to just sip at it. “Mon Dieu, it tastes so good..” As she sets the glass down, she looks up to see Ob standing right in front of her..
“Well hello Barbare. It's nice to meet you in person and not as a fantome*. I hope we will still be friends...”
