Star hits the ground laughing as Wolf knocks her over and tickles her with his whiskers. Erik smiles at their play, it was an old game and one that the big cats seemed to enjoy too with certain people. His eyes move towards Panther, seeming to lay nonchalantly in the shade. But Erik knew better. Tara was just on the other side of the big cat and Erik knew if an enemy approached the cat would rip them to shreds before ever getting close to the little girl.

Star sits up and her eyes follow her husbands. The question she is about to ask is suddenly silenced by Alises raised voice.

“I have not berated anyone....”

Worried glances are exchanged between Star, Erik and Stoney. Stoney starts to rise but is stopped by Stars hand on his arm.

“Let them be..... Alise needs to get this out......”

Stoney slowly resumes his seat. “I hope the Sorcerer does not see fit to turn us all into frogs if she kicks him...”

The argument was heated, neither Alise nor Mortuis willing to give an inch. While Mortuis seemed quite unruffled his raised voice the only indication of his anger Alise's face was red and her lapsing into French was a sign to those that knew her of how frustrated she really was.

Across the yard Tara sits up straight, revealing her hiding spot near the big cat. Her eyes go wide and dark at hearing her mothers anger. She stands slowly and moves towards Mortuis.

By this time Alise was out of arguments, and fear has replaced the anger and frustration she had been feeling at this plan. Her voice was choked now, throat tight from holding back tears that now could not be stopped and her head bowed.

“I cannot believe you would speak to me like this... after everything we have been through.... these are my children, my life, how could you possibly understand?”

Mortuis sighs and takes Alises hands in his own, lifting his hood slightly to kiss each of her small hands in turn. No one knew that he understood all too well. "Milady, it is because of our friendship that I feel I can be honest with you. I have sworn my life, my protection to you and your offspring. Can you not trust in that if nothing else?" His voice changes; it seems charged with venom. "The bitch-priestess must be taught a lasting lesson, preferably one that insures she never makes another attempt on any of the children again."

Neither adult has noticed Tara until she reaches up and takes two of Mortuis' fingers in her tiny hand. Mortuis startles slightly not that anyone would have noticed except Alise who was close enough to see the very slight change in his eyes. He looks down at the dark haired girl who looks up with serious large violet eyes.

Tara opens her mind the way tante Raina has taught her and lets the sorcerer's feelings wash through her. Urgency, regret, love and protectiveness... and a deep, deep sorrow, very buried and hidden from the light.

The little girl gives the fingers in her hand a squeeze and the sad smile she gives Mortuis makes him pause. I would think she found my deepest secrets... How could she possibly..... If so, that would make her a more powerful empath than even Raina.... and maybe more than an empath... A feeling of absolute trust washes over the sorcerer, for some reason unknown to him he feels this small child can be trusted to keep his secrets.

Tara then turns to her mother who immediately goes to her knees to embrace her daughter. Tara speaks in French, an attempt to keep her words private.

“Maman, Uncle Mortuis really does understand about the children, he really does... please dont fight anymore...”

The simple heartfelt words from a child have more impact on Alise than all the eloquence Mortuis can muster. She sees the earnestness in Taras eyes as tears slip down her cheeks again. Rising she offers her hand to Mortuis who does not hesitate in helping her stand.

“My apologies my friend. I cannot let my fear continue to control my actions...”

"Alise... no apology is necessary. Gratefully accepted, nonetheless. My life will stand surety for the safety of your children - mine, aye, and more besides."  The cold eyes lock briefly with that of each parent, and each feels as if his or her will and determination have been strengthened by that brief contact. What he sees must satisfy him, for he suddenly raises his voice. "This must end, and I say that it shall. If we must depopulate Underdark to do it, then let it be done." A fierce light burns in his eyes now.

"Are you with me, then? Shall we take down this bitch-priestesss and her odious followers for good and all?"

The response is like living thunder. "AYE!"

Ky visibly cringes, her ears bend down and her hands move up to cover them. “What the hell is that? One of the kids? How can she screech like that?”

Stoneys head snaps up at the sound and before anyone else can react he is moving towards the stairs and leaping over the railing. Demifae startled by the sound start to swarm near Tara.

As Stoney scoops up his daughter she starts to talk excitedly in rapid french....

*« Papan, nous avons un visiteur pour tante Star ... nounou ne peut pas le voir et il est l'un des hommes bleus ... il parle de Ryan avec ses mains comme sa maman ne ...”

Star recognizes her name and a small frown furrows her brow. “What is she talking about Alise?”

Stoney carries his daughter down the stairs while Ob reassures the nanny and demifae that nothing was wrong. Alise sits and Stoney sets Tara in her lap still speaking excitedly.

Marc who has been listening to the exchange leans to Rowan, “She sees spirits, the little one?”

Rowan nods, “She is an extremely gifted and sensitive child... is that what she is talking about?”

After a short exchange between Stoney and Alise, Alise turns to Star. “It seems there is someone that wants to speak to you. I think it might be Ghaunt....”

Before Star can respond Tara points to the landing on the stairs.** “Regardez! Il se tient juste là ….”

Stars face goes white and tears fill her eyes, “Oohh...it is Ghaunt...” and she walks slowly to the base of the stairs.

The group falls silent, letting Star visit with her friend. Tara watches from the safety of her mothers lap, curious as to the blue-gray spirit and why he appeared now.

After a few minutes Star returns to the table and to Eriks side. She dries her eyes with a handkerchief Rowan offers and then clears her throat. “Ghaunt wants me to tell you that this location...' Star points to spot on the map, “is not the best idea. He says this one..” and she moves her finger several inches to the right and picks up a red pen to circle the area, “this would be better...”

The entire group leans forward and the discussion is on.

Star looks to Erik, “He also said we need to include our son, so I am going to go get him. And Tomas if his parents are agreeable..”

“Princess, are you sure about this? I planned to go over the boys part with them tomorrow...”

“I am sure. Ghaunt would not tell me to do this if there was not good reason. I will be right back...” Star joins Alise and the women head upstairs taking Tara with them. Tara turns in her mothers arms looking back over her shoulder sees Ghaunt still on the landing as they pass. He smiles at Star then slowly fades from sight....

*Papan, we have a visitor for tante star...nanny cannot see him and he is one of the blue people... he talks to Ryan with his hands like his mommy does

**Look! There he is...

Star is smiling from ear to ear as she tells Raina about Nadia.

“Can you come over and meet her? We're almost home..”

“Dont you want some time with just your family? I can wait...” Raina asks, not wanting to intrude on the new family.

“No. Please come over. I want you and Tannr to meet her.”

An hour later finds Raina gently lifting the baby from Eriks arms and hearing her story as Tannr joins the group.

Raina shakes her head, “What an awful thing to do... thank the Gods that Marc noticed something wrong...”

Tannrs face is stormy, angry that anyone could abandon a helpless baby in the woods. He calms when he hears Tori in his mind...

It's fine now, the little one has the best home there is....I'll be there soon as I can to meet her.....

Tannr nods and takes a deep breath. He lifts Mera and kisses the side of her head. “What do you think Big Sister? You must remember her story to pass down... your families history is important...”

Mera nods solemnly, taking her Uncle Tannrs words to heart. “Can we get a message to Da? Just to let him know?”

Nodding Mya turns her eyes to Star, “Mya go to fairy tree. Leave message. Tell Mya what to say.” She flits to Star and lands on her shoulder.

“I think the message should be from Mera. It was her idea..” Star smiles at her foster daughter, amazed at how grown up she seems.

All smiles Mera thinks for a moment, then says to Mya, “This is the message, Da, a new Moon has joined the Night. She waits to meet you. Her name is Nadia...”

Mya flits up, “Mya back soon...”

Star laughs at Ruarcs antics as she tries to dress him for the day. The little boy was engaged in a game of tug of war with Lobo, his jeans in danger of being ripped in half. Mera was trying, without success to stop the wolf when suddenly shadowcat appeared in the middle of things causing Lobo to yelp and run and hide behind Wolf. Ruarc landed on his bottom with a 'thud'. Mya joined in everyones laughter but was startled into silence and zipped behind Star when Eriks cell went off.

Watching Erics face change from serious to smiling to angry has Star wondering who on earth was calling and what was wrong. When Erics hangs up all he will say is “We need to go over to Rowans”.

As Star readies the children she falls silent. She knew from the look on her husbands face that no amount of begging or pleading would make him tell her any more than he already had.

A short time later, Rowan lets her guests in and greets the children with hugs and kisses. Star wanders in and notices the welcoming fire burning in the living room. She approaches thinking to warm her hands and sees the cushion on the floor. Then sees a baby, bundled up, sound asleep.

“Oh! Rowan! Whose baby?” She kneels close to see the little one better. “What a cutie. Is it a girl?”

Rowan watches from the doorway as Star runs a finger over a soft cheek. “Hi little one. How are you?” Nadia opens her eyes and looks right at Star. “Ohh...look at your eyes, how pretty..” Star giggles in her strange whispery way and says “I think she likes me... Where did she come from?”

Rowan and Eric exchange a grin and Rowan gives him a nudge. “You can tell her...”

“Tell me what?” Stars eyes go dark, wondering what their secret is.

“Princess...the baby is a girl, her name is Nadia. She is only a few days old. And she needs a home...”

“A foster home like Mera?” Star asks quietly barely daring to hope.

“No. She needs a permanent home. Her mother cant care for her... Marc brought her to Rowan in the hopes of finding parents to adopt her.

Marc watches Stars eyes, a virtual kaleidoscope of colors. “Wow..”

Rowan grins at the comment, whispered just under Marcs breath.

“You mean we can adopt her? She can be ours?” Tears start to fill Stars eyes and when Eric nods the tears slip down her cheeks.

“ohh...thank you...” Star moves to Rowan throwing her arms around her. As she steps back she looks to Marc. Star takes one of his large hands in her tiny ones and looks up to him, her face streaked with tears but glowing with happiness. “Thank you...thank you for bringing her here...”

Marc can only nod, not trusting his voice. He was so relieved and happy for everyone, especially little Nadia who would now have a chance for a decent life.

Star goes back to the cushion and carefully takes the baby in her arms. “Hello Nadia. I am going to be your mommy from now on. You have a brother and a sister and lots of family that will want to meet you...”

She takes a seat on the couch so Ruarc and Mera can come close and meet their new sister.

Star looks down at the teasing, and excusing herself picks up Ruarc and moves closer to Eric who was talking to Nick about the roof on the other side of the building.

She sets Ruarc down who immediately races to his father and laughs happily at being swept up and placed on his fathers strong shoulders.

Turning her gaze to the woods beyond the boundaries of the manse Stars eyes go dark and serious. She startles a bit when Keon approaches.

Keon had noticed the sudden silence and stillness in Star when the others were teasing Tannr and Tori about starting a family. He knew she cried at times when she thought no one was looking and had figured it had something to do with wanting a baby.

“An' what has captured yer attention in the trees, Lass?”

Star turns her attention back to the tree line. “Those blue ones. They are always watching, just inside the shadows, but always there.”

“Are they are the Priestess' people or those who give your their protection? Can ye tell?”

“I dont know. They never come very close...”

Keon nods and remembers Inari's warnings. “That bitch will nae get close to you or any of the bairns …  all here would give their lives for any of them.. if its the Archers, they are guarding..”

Star continues to watch the trees and Keon wonders what she really is seeing. “There is something I want to tell you. I know I do not say it often enough, but you are a beautiful mother to my Mera. I wouldna want anyone else to do the raisin' of her...well except for her own mother, but that canna be...She loves you dearly... I couldna ask for more...”

“Ohh...thank you. We love her too, I cant imagine not having her with us... I wish the circumstances could have been different...” Her attention goes back to the trees. “I wish they would leave us alone. Tychus says the prophecy will unfold as it will, no matter what they do...”

“Well, Lass, the Drow, among others, must not see it that way.” Keons words and thoughts are interrupted by a tug on his shirt.

Keon looks down to see a smiling Gracie, curls bouncing.

“Unca Keon, maman says we can have sleepover. Can Mera stay? Chloe and Ryans mommies said yes.”

Star grins and looks to Keon who nods.

“An who could say nay to such a pretty little one? Of course, she can stay Miss Gracie.”

Gracie laughs happily and returns to the group of children anxious to tell Mera.

As the group starts to head for home, Tara turns her gaze towards the trees near the manse. She gives a small smile and surreptitious wave to the dark figure watching as she follows the group into the woods.

At the cabin Star was cleaning up after supper and Eric grabs Ru before he can race to the living room wearing a good portion of his meal.

“I think its bath time for you little man.” Ruarc squeals wanting to run but Erik lifts him easily and tosses him over a shoulder. He pauses, watching Star as she sets out coffee cups and napkins.

“Princess.... are we expecting company?”

“Yes.... we are....”

Meras head pops up from the book she was reading at the table. “Who Mama Star?”

“I dont know yet...” Star sets out a plate of cookies she had baked that afternoon.

Erik and Mera exchange a grin, knowing it was pointless to ask any more questions.

Star was outside, near her garden, working on making the baskets for the girls to carry at the wedding. Her fingers flew, weaving the tan colored fibers tightly together. She had her supplies stretched out in front of her on a blanket. Ru had tried to grab the colored ribbons that Mya dangled in front of him until he fell asleep next to Star.

Erik watched her for a few minutes from the stables before he approached her, wondering at the sad expression when she was doing something he knew she loved.

“Princess.... whats wrong? You dont look very happy...”

Pausing in her work Star gives a sad smile. “I dont know. I think I miss Mera...”

“She wont be gone long. Keon will keep her safe.”

“Oh, I know he will. I am sure she is having fun... its just that... the house is so quiet...”

Erik grins and looks to his sleeping son. “Quiet? With this little hellion running around?”

Star returns the grin, “Well, its just different with her gone. And our son is not a hellion.”

Dropping his large frame to the blanket Erik pulls Star into his arms and kisses her. “Do you want to talk to Rowan about adopting a baby? Its fine with me if thats what you want...”

“One will come to us when its time.” Star snuggles into her husbands arms. Wolf and Lobo come bounding from the trees to join the family and Mya sighs loudly.

“Quiet...'dont wake baby...” Mya flits to a finished basket and curls up inside. “Dont wake Mya...”

Star kneels in the grass, gathering the roses she had clipped to give to Pandora and Ob. Keon and Erik were finishing up in the kitchen and she still needed to get the kids ready for the ceremony. Her thoughts turn to the day Ruarc was born and how she could have easily lost him and her life. Tears start at the thought of what her friends must be going through.

She gently places her roses in a basket and wipes her eyes. When she looks up Mera is standing in front of her, her eyes wide at Stars tears.

“Mama Star! Dont be sad. The baby is with my mama and Grandma Grace.....” Mera wraps her arms around Stars neck.

Star holds the little body close amazed at how much she loves her foster child. “I know Sweetie. I am just sad for Pandora and Ob...” She looks up at a howl from Ru, Tiger having him cornered safely away from the woods that the toddler was always trying to get into.

Erik and Keon step out onto the porch and Erik smiles at the sight of his wife. Ru balanced on a hip, a basket of flowers in that hand and holding Meras hand with the other. Tiger was next to Ruarc, his almost constant companion. He moves off the porch to take Ruarc and tosses the little boy in the air.

“Time to get ready little man.”

Ru squeals with delight, “up, up..”

A few more tosses and then its in the cabin to change. Star slips on a soft blue sundress and helps Mera into a deeper blue one. Star runs a comb through Meras dark waves and adds a barrette, keeping her long bangs out of her face.

Erik grabs the keys to the jeep. “Are we all ready? Do we need to pick anyone up on our way?”

Star shakes her head. “Rowan will meet us there and so will Raina.” She picks up her basket of roses and follows Erik and Keon to the jeep.

Ky breaks into the clearing, her horse skidding, mud flying as she pulls on the reins. Star gasps, horrified at the amount of blood she sees. Tannr is barely recognizable, slumped over Ky, his clothes dark and wet, face ashen, the horse covered with blood and dripping into the new spring grass of the clearing.

Erik, Ke and Ramji rush forward and get Tannr off the horse. Ky slides off an instant after. Her clothes are soaked too but she doesnt notice. She looks at the group and asks “Wheres Tori?”

“On her way...” Star immediately trying to assess where all the blood is coming from as soon as Tannr is laid on the ground.

Tannr grabs her hand, “Leave it...useless...Tori...”

“I will not leave it....Listen.....” Star pauses for less than a second, “I can hear the wings, she's coming....”

Rowan races from the cabin where she had to leave the van to the group gathered at the far end of the clearing. She swallows hard at the sight of Tannr, barely breathing, skin almost grey in color.

“Sweet Goddess...what happened?” Rowan and Star moving quickly, packing the wound with towels.

Ob explains briefly, telling how big the spider/scorpion was and that is was more than likely poisonous.

“We need to get him to the manse, immediately. And we need donors....”

Tori lands and runs, changing forms as she moves. As she kneels by Tannr her face reveals her shock and anguish.

“Tannr....I'm here....”

Tannr turns his head, his eyes glassy and vision starting to blur, but he tries to focus on the sound of Toris voice. “Love you.....Red.....so much...” Tannr tries to reach for Toris hand.

Toris voice breaks, her reply whispered, sobs threatening but her voice full of love, tears streaming.

Suddenly Star grabs one of Toris shoulders her eyes bright with excitement. 'You have magic... make the bleeding slow long enough to get him to the sorcerers... Erik...GO....He will need your blood.....take Gunnaar...his too....”

“But...I dont.... Star...” Toris voice breaks.

“You can....I know you can....just do it....” Star sees the desperate pain in Toris face and takes her hand, covered in Tannrs blood. “Do it...now....there is no time to waste...”

Pandora kneels next to Tori and takes her hand, “We can do this...we'll do it together. Its a simple spell, but we have to hurry...”

Tori swallows hard and tries to stop the tears so she can concentrate.

Pandora squeezes her hand, “Just try to open yourself to the magic, like when you channel elemental energy....”

Star had been feeling uneasy and agitated all day, the feelings only increasing with the waning day. After supper she left Erk and Keon talking and had stepped outside to get a breath of fresh air feeling closed in and trapped inside the cabin. She scans the treeline and suddenly sees a small shape detach itself from the darkening forest and head quickly towards her.

Ever alert to those evil goblins Star takes a step backwards before she realizes the figure is a demifae, not a goblin.

“Erik!” she calls out as she recognizes Imp. The little fae is exhausted and falls at Stars feet. Erik exits the cabin as Star gently scoops Imp up in her hands.

“Whats happened?” Erik asks, worry plain in his voice.

Imp gasps and takes a few deep breaths. “Tannr. Ky bringing him, not far behind me. Call healer, condition is grave.” Imp pauses, taking another breath then says, “Milady...do not let the children see..”

Eriks face goes pale and he races for the phone.

Almost everyone had arrived and the pits were full of meat. The mixed aromas had set everyones stomachs to growling. Stars kitchen was full of good food, laughing women, the love that surrounds good friends and family. But on her way to the cabin to check on the preparations, Star pauses, her whole body going quiet and still. Her gaze takes in the tree line, her eyes shifting from blue to gray to orange. Trooper stands and moves from his spot in the shade near the stables and sits near Star, rubbing his head against her side. Keon notices Stars stillness and Trooper moving. He silently approaches Star from behind. “What is it lass?”

“Someone is watching. From the woods. I can feel it....” Star says quietly, her eyes never leaving the darkness of the forest.

Wish and Pike go skipping past. “We'll find what worries the Star...” Star nods, almost absently, her brow creased. “I dont want Tori to worry...about them...”

“I know lass. But none can get close and t'would be foolish for any to try. The hounds will warn us and keep any intruder at bay. Her brothers would rip to shreds any that try to capture her...thats if anything is left after Tannr is finished with them...”

Keon grins and gently touches Stars shoulders urging her away from gazing at the shadows. “The meal will soon be ready.....”

Lowering her gaze Star heads to the cabin with Keon. Once on the porch she looks back but doesnt feel anything amiss. “They're gone, I think...”

Keon nods and enters but Star pauses, watching the kids playing, Tomas and Ryan moving dirt in their buckets, making forts for Batman and Godzilla. Ru riding on Gunnaars shoulders. The girls playing tag, colorful scarves billowing out behind them as they run. She watches as Erik walks towards the cabin, laughing at something Tannr is telling him. Star smiles, her world safe and complete with her husband near. Glancing around her yard, she takes in the assortment of people gathering. So many are accomplished fighters in their own right. Wish and Pike return from the woods and get pulled into the game the girls are playing. Star shakes her head and turns to follow Keon inside. If the Wyldfae were playing, there was nothing out there.

Star watches as Mera walks towards the river hand in hand with Eite. She knew the little girl needed a dip in the water and Eite said there was a perfect place, a slow moving pool in a bend in the river right near the camp. Keon and Ky were going to watch for intruders just in case.

A light touch on her shoulder makes Star turn and smile. Erik was holding a squirming Ruarc, who since recently learning to take a few steps always wanted to be on the move. Erik gently pushes the hair away from Stars face. “They'll be fine.... you know she needs to swim now and then..”

Star nods, “I know. Its just that she is growing so fast.”

Taking her hand Erik leads her to a fallen log. “Lets just sit and enjoy some quiet.. .its been quite the trip so far...”

“It has...” Stars thoughts slip back to the afternoon and the meal shared with the Queens. It was hard to relax and enjoy things when both the Queens were present. Star felt like she was trying to be a referee when she wasnt even sure of the rules of the game. Luckily Tychus sat next to her and explained many things to her throughout the course of the meal. They had a plan to meet with Chiara and set up some sort of curriculum for the children. They would have several teachers for different subjects. Tychus thought it best to go ahead and start since Ruarc would learn from the older children as well. Erik said that made sense to him, laughing at memories of Tannr trying to copy everything he did.

After the meal, the Queens left, both having other duties to attend to. Titania had left a large guard so the group could spend the night and not worry about an attack. Star had watched as Inari excused herself from the table, presumably to change from her dress back into her more practical riding clothes. Star thought she looked beautiful in a dress, her long hair left down and pulled back simply away from her face. She noticed the looks her and Keon exchanged and had asked Ky about it.

“Well, its kind of hard to explain. I think there are some strong feelings there... but their backgrounds, stations in life, families...” Ky shook her head. “Its all pretty much insurmountable, no matter what they want. And toss in the fact that he used to be part of Mabs court and she has given body and soul to Titanias service...”

“Everything is so different here....” Star didnt understand and let the conversation drop.

She sighs, her thoughts and the days activities making her tired. She leaned against Erik watching Ru stumble around after some wood sprites. The smaller creatures were braver now that the camp was a little quieter.

The peace was soon interrupted by a squealing Mera, Ky carrying her upside down. She was dripping wet, laughing and carrying a small creature that looked something like a blue turtle.

“Mama Star! Look! Eite caught him for me...” Ky set the little girl down right side up. “But just to show you.. he has to go back in the water...”

As Star laughs and walks with Mera back to the river, Ky takes her seat on the log. She looks to Erik, “She seems a little overwhelmed...”

Erik nods, “I think so too, I am sure she would rather go home in the dark than stay any longer, but that wouldnt be safe..”

Shaking her head Ky says “No, that wouldnt be the best idea. Too many bad things come out at dark around here, especially for the unwary...We're safe in a group like this.”

Raina approaches and takes a seat on the ground, long legs folded under her. “Whats up?”

“We were just saying that Star seems a little overwhelmed by everything...”

Raina nods, “She'll be all right though. It takes some getting used to I imagine. Especially when you consider how shy she was...” her thoughts interrupted by the sight of Inari greeting a very handsome warrior, his smile bright and engaging, long dark hair that begged to be pushed out of his eyes.

“Who is that?”

Ky turns to see who Raina is watching and grins. “Thats Torin, commander of the Nighthawks, the one I was teasing Inari about.... I dont think we'll be seeing much of her tonight....”

Sunday, March 4, 2012

After the ceremony Titania excuses herself to go see that her pavilion and tents were properly set up for the meal she had invited all the visitors to. She speaks briefly to Keon, telling him where her tents were located, deep in the forest, not far from the Grove.

Giving Star a few minutes to compose herself, Inari waits and then watches as she thanks the keepers of the Grove, expressing her pleasure with the burial site and the ceremony.

“Excuse me...” Inari starts to back off as Erik pulls Star close.

“No, its fine, you arent interrupting.” Star turns to Inari and Ruarc does too, wondering who his mother is talking to. Inari is struck by how much they look alike, but Ruarcs features are definitely masculine while Star is small and petite. Maybe its the eyes changing color almost in unison and the silver blonde hair...

“I would like you both to meet someone..”

Star watches as Inari waves over the older man she was talking to earlier. He limps just a bit and uses a walking stick but seems bright and spry for one so old.

“This is Tychus, my old teacher and now my friend. Tychus, this is Lady Star, her husband Erik Thorsson and their son Ruarc...”

“The one the legends speak of...” Tychus grins at the boy and takes a small hand in his. “A strong grip he has.. My apologies for not kneeling, it gets harder to do at my age...”

“No... please, dont even try. No one has to kneel for me... or us...” Star stammers a bit, flustered at all the attention.

“My dear, would you do an old man the honor of taking a walk with him? There are things we should speak of...”

Monday, February 27, 2012

Arriving at the Grove of Tears, Star is suddenly tongue tied, whether from the serene beauty of the place, her overwhelming sadness at the task ahead or being so far away from home, she wasnt sure. Inari dismounts first and moves to speak with a taller blonde fae who stood waiting, her head bowed and hands clasped loosely in front of her.

Erik jumps down and takes Star around the waist, helping her off her horse. Inari approaches and introduces the fae woman and explains that it is her family that has tended the Grove as far back as anyone could remember. The woman offers her sympathies and asks Star if she would like to privately view the burial site and approve of it before the ceremony. Star nods, her eyes changing from inquisitive yellow to gray with sadness. The womans eyes go a bit larger at the sight but she doesnt act as if anything was out of the ordinary as she calmly leads Star towards the river that runs through the Grove.

Tears fill her eyes and slip slowly down her cheeks when Star sees the spot Inari had chosen for Ghaunts final resting place. The sapling had been planted and its small trunk supported by stakes and twine until it took root. Star could see the river from the small grassy rise and hear the birds and countless other small creatures that made the Grove their home.

As she turns to leave she sees the fae woman suddenly go to her knees. As Star looks up she sees Titania, in a regal gold and blue flowing dress but barefoot and smiling at Star.

“I hope you dont mind, but I wanted to say hello in private, so we dont have to go through all the formalities...” As she speaks she waves for the fae woman to rise. “How is the little one? I hear you have brought him with you...?”

Star bows her head and smiles. She likes Titania, but she knows from conversations with Inari that she can be ruthless when need be. “He is fine, growing a lot and says a few words now..”

“You must be so proud, and I hear he looks like you...” Titania and Star walk slowly away from the river and towards the main entrance to the Grove.

“I am... he is amazing... His eyes are like mine, but he will be a big man, like his father...” Stars eyes sparkle with happiness when she talks about her son and her husband.

Titania nods, enchanted with Star. “Have you given any thought as to Ruarcs education? I mean other than sword play which I am sure he will have ample instruction and example...”

Star hesitates, knowing that it was custom among the fae to send their children to boarding type schools and she had no intention of doing that to Ru. “A little... we have friends with little ones too... he seems so young to be thinking about schooling...”

“After the ceremony there is someone Inari and I would like you to meet... and I think he is excited to meet you too..”

As they approach the entrance Star sees Inari speaking with an older fae man and they both seem overjoyed at seeing each other. Her attention is abruptly changed when everyone in Titanias entourage turns to her and kneels. Star stops dead in her tracks, not sure what to do.

Titania chuckles, “Annoying isnt it? Its a wonder anyone around here has knees left to kneel on.”

Star quickly suppresses a giggle and the Queen notices how embarrassed and uncomfortable the girl seems. She leans close, “Just wave your hands” , she makes an upward motion with her hands, “like this...”

Star smiles gratefully as everyone stands and she looks for Erik, her anchor. All the attention of the past days has her feeling confused and a little frightened. Her smile widens as her eyes fall on him, holding Ruarc, and she feels reassured by his presence.

Titania nods, following Stars gaze. “And there he is.” She turns to Star, “I know this is all strange and new to you. Dont be afraid to ask if you have questions. We will do all we can to help you and the young Warrior...” As Erik approaches Titania asks, “May I hold him?”

“Of course...” Star doesnt hesitate, knowing that everyone would see this as a sign of the Queens protection.

Ruarc looks at the Queen curiously and reaches for a large blue stone on a chain around her neck. Titania laughs and unfastening the clasp she hands the medallion to Ruarc, who promptly sticks it in his mouth. Before Erik and Star can object, the stone obviously worth a great deal, Titania waves her hand, “Let him have it. Its too big a piece to be attractive on a woman anyway, and I have others...too many others. The young Warrior should have a remembrance of his first trip here.” Titania turns and notices one of the fae from the Grove stands silently at the edge of the clearing. “I think they are ready for us... Star? You should go first since there is no family present...”

It seemed to Star that it was morning in Faerie, the sun light soft and golden on the plants and trees. Mera and Ru were wide eyed at everything, the different light and colors, and the small troop of demifae that started to follow them. Keon reassured Erik that he expected that and that by the time they reached the grove there would be more, and possibly races other than the demifae. Every time Star looked back there seemed to be more. And once she started paying attention to the forest alongside the trail they were on it seemed as if the plants and brush were moving along with the horses. Watching closely for gaps in the vegetation proved there were numerous tiny wood fae and creatures following that way, their modes of transportation using leaves and nut shells brings a smile to Stars face.

After some time, the group pauses in a small clearing with a quiet stream running through it. Star smiles, “It's so beautiful here...” The leaves are a strange combinations of the palest green and turquoise and shimmer with gold highlights in the sun.

“A good place for a break.” Inari returns the smile, enjoying the look of wonder on Stars face.

Star stumbles when she gets off her horse, “Oh... my legs....” Erik grabs her as she steadies herself. Star takes Ru from Wish who stays close, taking her role as Ru's guardian for this trip very seriously. Mera slips a hand into Star's free one, smiling at her Da as he leads the horses to water for a drink.

Ru is happy as can be, trying to talk to any demifae that flit close, eyes wide with curiosity.

“Mama!” and he points to the edge of the trees where in the shadows of the plants fairy lights can faintly be seen.

As Star watches she sees two tall dark forms step away from the trees. She gasps and looks around. Inari moves next to her, head bent and whispers, “They have been following us for awhile now. I doubt they mean any harm. They look young and their weapons are sheathed and are not those of full fledged warriors. If they had been warriors I don't think they would have gotten this close, not with the escort we seem to be attracting.”

Suddenly Inaris voice rings out, authoritative and demanding.

“Show yourselves! Or I will drag you out in the open.”

Wish and Pike move in even closer to the children, Raina and Ky right behind them, swords ready. Star holds her breath and senses all the creatures and fae following do the same. A sudden hush comes on the entire group.

Two young Drow step from behind a large gnarled tree. Their skin a bit lighter than what Star had seen on most in Underdark or it could have been just the light. But they didnt look very threatening to her. Empty handed, hands loosely at their sides. Star reaches out and lays a hand on Eriks arm, a silent cautioning to do nothing rash.

Inari asks, “Why are you following? You are a bit far from home...”

The taller of the pair nods. “We wanted to see her...” and he lifts a hand to point at Star. “Our legends speak of one who has the mark of Bal-Char and has survived. We mean her no harm, nor any of you.”

Right then Ru gave out a squawk, a small demifae having dropped an acorn on his head. He laughs and tries to grab the little fairy who starts to chatter and flits out of his reach. As Star shifts Ru from one hip to the other, her cloak falls to one side, exposing one of her arms.

The two Drow gasp, “She is the one....” they exchange a startled look and melt into the forest as if they had never been there.

“Should we go after them?” asks Ky, itching for a fight.

Inari shakes her head. “No. It would just slow us down and we dont have far to go. I dont think they are going to come back, they seemed in awe of Star and the marks on her arm. I know little of their legends or prophecy, but if they wanted to attack us they would have, not that they would have got very far with that...” Inari grins and her look takes in the entire group. “And they looked pretty young. Lets continue on. We should be at the Grove in a couple more hours...”

Inari nods as Star goes over a list with her. Keon and Erik are sitting at the table with them, the kids playing quietly in front of the fireplace.

“Good choices all, sound reasoning... You must have put some thought into this...” Inari looks to Star who suddenly turns shy and looks at the table.

Erik exchanges a glance with Keon and clears his throat. “Princess... you could have asked one of us to help you with the planning...”

Star shrugs and almost whispers, “I thought I should take care of it.” She looks up, a worried expression on her face, “Is there something I should change?”

“No, not at all. Like Inari said, you must have put a lot of thought into this.” Erik quickly scans the list, realizing how much time and care his wife must have put into it. There is a look of quiet pride on his face; is this the same woman he met when he came to Exton? No, unquestionably she has grown and matured - though he sometimes despairs of ever getting her to think before acting on impulse. Perhaps it is the responsibility she bears now for Ruarc, even more than Mera; for Mera, gods grant, will never have the terrible task that awaits their son.

“I..I havent talked to anyone yet... I have to ask Tannr if he and Tori can stay here and watch the animals. So we need to go and get back before he goes back to Underdark.” Star falls silent at the thought. She gets a bad feeling from the whole idea of Tannrs revenge, but she knows he wont listen to her. If Tori cant convince him not to go back then no one could.

Keon looks at the list Star had painstakingly made. A list of who was to accompany them to the Grove of Tears, what their position was in the group and notes in the margins as to why and why not. Keon smiles, There is a lot more to this lass, maybe more than we will ever truly know.... She has Pike and Wish in charge of the kids, Pike with Ru and Wish with Mera, thinking Mera would be more content with her company. And a note to the side, “ask Keon about Mera”.

Keon lays the lists on the table in front of him where Erik can see it plainly. “Have ye nae talked to her about strategy, brother?”

Erik shakes his head, “No, I didnt think that was something I needed to teach her...”

“To answer your question that you have written here, of course Mera can come. And as to the planning, I couldna done a better job myself.”

Erik looks at the list again. Inari riding point, Nick in the air, watching from above for any sign of trouble. Dimitri and Ramji behind Inari, then he and Star and right behind them Ru and Mera with Wish and Pike. Then Raina and Ky right behind the kids. The rearguard consisting of Gunnaar, Keon and Gareth. The kids were as well protected as they could possibly be.

After some minor discussion about what was needed in the way of supplies and how long it would take Star rose from the table.

“Is something wrong Princess?” Erik asks.

Star shakes her head, “Raina and her family are coming over. I called her earlier....”

As Star steps out onto the deck a car can be heard and doors slamming. It was still a walk to the cabin from the end of the road unless you had a truck or a jeep and Erik mentally makes a note to talk to Star about changing that. Last time he tried she adamantly refused, saying the cars would scare her animals.

A short time later Tannr and Tori arrive. After plans are explained and finalized, Inari excuses herself. Telling Star and Erik she would be back on the appointed day she says goodbye and disappears into the night, taking the sapling with her. She would drop it off on her way to the Queen and return to offer escort to Star and her group. Keon follows her out and watches admiringly as she easily mounts her horse.

“Will this be as quick a journey as the others are thinkin'?”

Inari grins and shakes her head, “No, it wont be.”

“Aye, thats what I was afraid of. We'll be arriving with a full escort from all the races of Faerie...”

“I imagine they are all curious about her... and the little one. But I dont think it will hold us up by more than a few hours... a day at the most...”

Keon nods, “We'll be seein' ya soon then. And I will try to explain to Erik....”

A few days after the new year Star and Pike make their way through the woods to the Willow tree where Ghaunt use to wait for her. The sight of the large graceful tree for the first time since Ghaunts passing made Star cry. She dropped the burlap bag she was carrying and wiped her eyes.

Turning large gray eyes to Pike she says, “I miss him...”

Pike nods and smiles sadly. Ghaunt had given his life for people he barely knew. He did it for the people Star cared about. Few were so selfless in this world or any other.

“We have to pick a good strong sapling. Inari said the Keepers of the Grove would see to it after we plant it and make sure it grows.” Star ducks under the long whip thin branches, bare of leaves this time of year. She takes a deep breath to steady her emotions and looks around. On the other side of the trunk she sees a sapling that looks right to her. Good and strong but not too big yet. She motions to Pike who brings the shovel and the burlap and he sets to digging. Star listens to his soft chanting, then he thanks the main tree for its young one.

Once the small willow is dug up Star sets to binding the roots in the burlap. As she works she hears a scratching noise and looks around, ever on guard to those evil goblins that knocked her down the day Ruarc was born.

A slight mewing noise has her on her feet and looking amongst the dead fallen leaves and long bare branches hanging on the ground.

Pike hears “Oh! You poor thing..” and smiles. Star was always tending to some animal or another and from the sounds of it had found another that needed her attention.

Star emerges through the branches, something dark grey and silky in her arms and purring loudly. Pikes eyes widen as the kitten turns its red eyes to him. He knows it is a Shadowcat from Underdark, and he also knows there is nothing he can possibly say to make Star leave the kitten behind in the woods.

Returning to the cabin Star sees Erik and Keon waiting for her on the deck. Ru is sitting on a blanket with Mera, both enjoying the unusually mild winter day.

“We have the tree. Inari will be here tomorrow, she can take it to the Grove and then we can get ready to go...”

Keon nods but his attention is transfixed by the creature in Stars arms. Erik starts to argue and stops with a loud sigh at the look on her face. He knows she will go without him if he doesnt agree to go along.

Looking to Pike then back to Star, Keon asks, “Pike, lad, did ya not see that was a Shadowcat? Should the lady be bringin' that home, do ya think?”

Erik noticed the creature in Stars arms for the first time, half hidden in her jacket.

“Shadowcat? As in from Underdark? You brought it home?”

“Of course I brought her home. Ghaunt sent her to me and she's staying.” Stars expression became even more stubborn if that were possible.

Lobo comes bounding from the stables and stops dead at Stars feet, sniffing, trying to figure out what the new animal is. Suddenly the cat gives a small hiss and turns its red eyes on Lobo. The young wolfs howling brings Wolf off the porch to see whats wrong. Ru starts to squeal wanting to see and before Mera can try to pick him up on her own, Erik bends down and takes a child in each arm. “What am I going to do with your mama? We will have a zoo here before much longer...”

Ryan pulls his mother down on the bed and the children attack, laughing and screeching with happiness. When the giggles subside, Chiara teaches them how Ryan says good night using his hands. They all repeat the gestures solemnly as if they were learning a very valuable lesson. And little did anyone know at the time that it would be a valuable lesson for those that someday would be warriors. Chiara smiles and teaches them a few more words before they all settle in. Tomas and Ryan had made a fort with blankets and were sleeping on beds of more blankets on the floor. The girls were all crowded in Keons bed, since there was more room than in Meras day bed. Mya flitted around and kissed each one on the forehead, then Star turned out the lights, leaving one dimmed in case anyone got up in the night.

Mya flits to the living room, Star and Chiara following. She heads up to the large potted plant placed between the fireplace and a large window. Mya had brought the refugees to the cabin to recuperate and reunite with their families. Tomorrow she and Imp would escort them to the fairy tree then Imp would rejoin Inari on her mission.

Star and Chiara join the men in the kitchen. Erik hands the pair steaming mugs of chocolate, one of Stars favorites. The women sit in front of the fireplace visiting and getting to know each other. Ever since Alise had mentioned the children needing a teacher and seeing how comfortable Chiara was with the children a plan had been forming in Stars mind. Chiara had thought Meras skin beautiful and admired her soft webbings, she didnt seem to mind the 'otherness' of the children or the fact they were all of mixed parentage, she just accepted them all as they were. She had mentioned she had been giving Ryan his lessons before he was taken.

Conversation was easy and enjoyable. Talk turned to finding a proper willow sapling for Ghaunts grave and Yule logs for the cabin, the tavern and Alise and Stoneys place, Star wondering if Tori had a fireplace. When Chiara mentioned they had no family, Star invited her to Yule, knowing Alise would agree wholeheartedly, and they could work out the details later.

Star steps out onto the porch right in time to see Wish tumble off the rail and she smiles at her. Her gaze then moves to the horses and riders standing just on the other side of the clearing. She smiles and heads across the yard.

Inari turns her head to Chiara, “This is the woman who rescued your son from Underdark and has cared for him since.”

Chiara nods and slips off the horses back, followed by Inari.

When Star is face to face with the group her natural shyness starts to take over and her voice is hushed. She looks first to Inari, 'Is this her?” and Inari nods.

'Star, this is Chiara...” Inari takes a step to one side so that the two women can see each clearly. “Chiara, this is Lady Star...”

Chiara gasps when she sees Stars eyes change color and falls to her knees. “Lady of the Stars and Moons, the mother of the Warrior...”

Taken aback at first and then trying to supp ress her giggles, Star squats down and takes Chiaras hands. “You dont have to kneel. I'm a mother, just like you. Would you like to see your son?”

Star gently helps Chiara to her feet as the woman nods, “Yes, yes, I have missed him so much. He has been almost a year now...” Her eyes go wide at the sight of Wolf and Lobo, coming to see what Star was doing. The happy sounds from the children are carried to the group on the breeze.

“Wolf... go get the boys... go get them....” Star gives Wolf a push and the animal trots off. Lobo sits at Stars feet, tongue hanging out, enjoying the ear rubbing she was getting.

Soon they hear the sounds of two boys, squealing and laughing at being dragged, then pushed, then dragged again, Wolf determined to do Stars bidding.

Inari watches Chiara closely. Suddenly the fae womans eyes fill with tears yet her smile is bright as the sun. “Its him, its Ryan...” She starts to run across the clearing and Tomas and Robin look up from their game with Wolf. Ryan jumps up and mouths 'mama' before he is off like a shot. He barrels into Chiara, knocking her flat. Star has to wipe her eyes and the rest of the group is smiling, the small families joy at being reunited infectious.

Turning to Keon, Inari grins, “I dont think there's any doubt about these two...” She lays a hand on Stars shoulder, “You have made two people incredibly happy...”

Star turns tear stained cheeks to Inari, “But look at Tomas... he is so confused. Not sure if he should be happy for his friend or sad at losing him.”

Star walks over to Tomas and kneels in the grass in front of him. Looking over his shoulder she sees Stoney, on his way to see why his son has suddenly gone so still. Star wraps her arms around the little boy and kisses the soft golden curls so much like Alises.

“I promise I will speak to her about visiting... We cant keep him here away from his mother. You would not want to be apart from your family would you?”

Tomas looks at Star then to Stoney who has just joined them. “No, Tante Star. I love maman. She would be sad if I were gone..”

Star stands and Stoney lifts his son in his arms. “Maman will be proud of you, as I am Tomas.”

Tomas sends to his father, I will miss him Papan...

I know my son, I know...

Standing, still laughing and crying, Chiara goes to Star. “Milady, I dont know how to thank you or to repay you for finding him and caring for him. He tells me you have been like a mother to him, you and this little ones mother...”

He says this is his brother now...” Chiaras voice chokes, “You have no idea... he has been cruelly teased since he lost his voice, for him to have a friend..”

Ever sensitive to others sadness, Star wraps her arms around Chiara. The whispered conversation was for their ears alone. Wiping their tears the two woman smile and Robin, now Ryan, tugs on his mothers dress and points to Tomas, using unfamiliar gestures. Chiara smiles, “He tells me you are his brother, his best friend.” Chiara holds her hand out and Tomas takes it, proud to be treated like an adult. “I am pleased to meet you Tomas and happy to find my son has such a fine friend.”

Tomas blushes and stammers a “Merci” before Alise joins the group and rescues him.

Introductions are made all around and Star invites the family and Inaris group to supper. She hooks arms with Chirara as they head towards the cabin and Chiara whispers, “I dont eat meat, I hope that wont be a problem or offend you.”

Grinning Star replies, “I dont either... so its fine...”

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

Inari slipped quietly into the tavern halfway through the meal. She pauses in the same spot Star did and looks for K'ythri. She was sitting with Gareth, laughing at something that Raina just said when she looked up and saw her old friend. Excusing herself she hurries over to the edge of the room and hugs Inari fiercely.

“I was wondering if you were going to show... Where have you been?”

Inari returns the hug and smiles. “We found the little ones mother...” She glances towards the boys sitting with Stoney and Alise.

“Oohh... dont tell him tonight. The kids are having a ball... Can it wait until tomorrow?””

Nodding slowly Inari says, “It can. I need to speak with Star about the burial arrangements and planned to do that tomorrow. I can tell her then.”

Before Ky can respond, Guunnar has spotted Inari and raises his glass and his voice. “To the Ambassador!”

Monty hands Inari a glass on his way by with another tray. She raises her glass and steps from the shadows. “To the Warriors...” She walks around the tables and stops behind Tannr. “All I did was keep this one from running off by himself...” She bends down, her words quiet, “Well done Tannr. If determination were all it took you could have brought her home without anyones help.” Turning to Tori she squeezes the gargoyles shoulder, “You are a lucky woman. Welcome home.”

Tales were told and various toasts were made, the group in high spirits. Erik looked at Star, seated next to him, and noticed she had barely touched her food.

“Princess... whats wrong? You usually love Montys cooking...”

“I do. .its just that...” Stars words trail off her voice quiet and close to tears. Her gaze takes in the group gathered, all Warriors in one way or another and their families. She understands the laughing and celebrating but she felt they were all forgetting something.

Scooting her chair back, Star stands slowly. Those seated near her fall silent and gradually the entire room quiets.

Taking a ragged breath Star tries to speak past her tears. “I... I think... I mean...” She closes her eyes for a second and centers herself. “I think we need to take a moment to remember those that are no longer physically here with us. Ghaunt gave his life to save ours. He was a good man, a good friend. And he taught me that there is good in all people, and to not be so quick to judge.” Star raises her glass, “To my friend, Ghaunt.”

Glasses raised high and the entire group responds in one voice, “To Ghaunt!!”

Star smiles as she sips her raspberry wine then finds herself drawn into her husbands arms.

“I am unbelievably proud of you. I love you...”

Before Star can respond she finds herself pulled close to Tori. “I wanted to tell you that I am so sorry you lost your friend. And to thank you. That sounds crazy said together..”

“No, it doesnt. I understand.” Star smiles as she is hugged again and another toast is made to her and Tori.

Tori turns to the group, her glass raised. “Thank you all. I will try to talk to each one of you at some point tonight, but there are really no words. Thank you...” tears fill her eyes as her glance takes in loved ones and friends, “from the bottom of my heart.”

As she steps back she can feel her siblings love and support. Their quiet strength has helped her many times in her life. She didnt know what she would do without them and their families. Suddenly she is wrapped in Tannrs embrace and the group cheers again. She starts to laugh, “We better get to dessert or everyone is going to be too drunk to enjoy it.”

“I have something to add...” Tannr steps forward and addresses the group. “Something I think we are all guilty of from time to time. The fallacies of bigotry. I hated the Drow. Hated all of them and everything they stood for. There were reasons for that...good reasons... but it blinded me to the good Star saw in Ghaunt. I hated him at first and I didnt want my sister to be anywhere near him. But in the end he helped us save Tori... he saved us all. I could no more live without this woman than the air I breathe. I owe a debt that can never be repaid and I wasted precious time that could have been spent getting to know the man my sister knew instead of hating someone that did not deserve it. May we never be so quick to judge another...” Tannr raises his glass high, “and to Ghaunt... the bravest man I have ever known.”

As the group cheers and drinks Tannr can feel Toris love and pride. He turns and takes her in his arms, then leads her back to their places at the table.

Tomas perks up “Now dessert?”

Laughing Alise says, “Yes, there is dessert. If you two can sit still long enough to eat it... and do not feed any more of your food to Wolf and Lobo.”

Tomas and Robin exchange glances that tell everyone sitting close enough that they were indeed guilty of feeding Stars wolves.
