One of the girls takes Alises good hand and they move through the trees. Alise stumbles and falls every few steps and is out of breath, panting hard but refuses to stop. After an hour or so, they have only covered a mile and thats when they hear the first howls...
The were females start to panic, “He knows you are gone and that you must have had help. It would be best if we split up. Keep going straight ahead, you should come to a railroad track and beyond that a stream. Keep going and the shifters should find you. We will each take a different direction and try to get back. Go.....hurry.....”
Alise turns to thank them but they have already disappeared into the darkness. She tries to hurry, fear helping her to go a little faster now. She stumbles and falls, landing on her injured hand, the pain turning her stomach. Unable to organize her thoughts she starts to hum the song that Stoney has been singing to her, hoping he can pick up on it and somehow find her. She keeps going until she sees the tracks. She rests a minute to catch her breath and thats when she hears the howling again, this time followed by a blood curdling scream. Alise tries to run, afraid that she will be the next one to be torn to shreds and eaten, the image of the girl she has seen murdered never far from her thoughts.
When she gets to the stream, she pauses, thinking she hears someone following her. Stoney, I went past the railroad tracks, now theres a stream. Can he scent me if I walk in the water? I am going downstream. I can hear someone following. I think he killed one of the girls that helped me....
Alise tries to make her way in the water. She stumbles over unseen stones and rocks and the water is freezing cold. Nearing exhaustion, she stops near the edge of the water and sitting, she leans against a tree. As she looks back she sees something break through the cover of the trees and it sniffs the air. Alise is frozen in place, Stoney, I think it is Jean-Marc, please hurry, I dont think he can see me, I am near the water, the big tree by the water....
