"A vamp?" I shake my head. "Not a chance. No vamp would waste that much blood, and even those of us who never got mentored by a more experienced vamp would know better than to leave a mess like that. That kind of thing makes people talk and eventually brings the authorities in. I suspect the only reason it hasn't been on the news is that it happened in a bad part of town, and the cops aren't all that eager to look into the murder of someone who lives there - or works there, whichever it turns out to be. Now if it was one of our more affluent citizens, slumming, the case would be getting more attention. But one, no body was ever found, so there are no clues to follow, and any forensic evidence will have degraded to the point of uselessness by now; two, it happened in an area where the police don't go without compelling reason; and three, the people who live there don't like the cops anyway, so they probably wouldn't learn much if they did go. Odds are no one has even told the police about this bloody alleyway; instead, they passed it on to someone they considered more likely to actually do something about it."
