Damn the woman... The words are all in his mind, Nathlyn dare not speak them aloud. This is madness. Reconnaissance is one thing, learning the habitual movements of the child you hope to steal... but to keep eight men on constant duty, on the off-chance that the child might wander into your reach...!

The priestess overreaches herself. She has gone from serving a goddess to believing that she herself is a goddess. No good can come of this....

The mission began sanely enough. Nathlyn and his men had been dispatched to monitor the progress of the child Ardara was having trained to fight the human child Ruarc, the child of the prophecy. If you believe in that kind of thing.... Before they set out, the priestess had taken Nathlyn aside and confided her new orders to him alone. He and his men were to remain on detached duty indefinitely, learning all they could about the gargoyle children and watching for an opportunity to steal one or more of them. Another of her damned obsessions... how could any race, no matter how unusual, be a match for the Drow? No two of them are the same... what the priestess takes for "uniqueness" is merely deformity... no doubt these creatures breed with their cousins, or even their siblings....
