Meeting over, plans made, tired as hell.
I head upstairs to the nursery, trying to be quiet so as not to wake the babies. I smile in spite of myself when I see that Star is sprawled all over the bed… from some of the positions she gets into, you'd swear the woman had no bones. Her hair is fanned out all around her and there's a child on either side - Tara to the left, Tomas to the right.
I bend and whisper in her ear. "Time to go, gorgeous." She stirs but doesn't wake, which is unusual… usually she sleeps as lightly as a wild animal. Mera is in the crib with Gracie and for a moment I ponder the logistics of getting her and Star out in one trip, before very sensibly deciding the thing is impossible. Or maybe my poor old brain just isn't up to it….
Fortunately, just about that time Stoney makes an appearance. He grins, recognizing my predicament. "Gracie will be fine for a few minutes. Can I offer you a hand?"
I grin. "You take the baby, I'll get the hottie."
Outside, we find Keon waiting for us at the Jeep. He takes Mera from Stoney while I get Star settled, then helps me strap her into her car seat. "There will be watchers along the path, blood-brother. Fear not for your safety, or theirs."
"You're welcome to spend the night if you like."
"I will come, speak to the Hounds and those who watch already. See you and Ours safely guarded. Then I needs must take a Patrol. There are some waiting for me."
Somehow the trip back to the cabin feels very safe indeed….
