Laila and Alise are cleaning up after the children have decorated cookies. The kitchen table had been covered with frosting and sprinkles of every color, as had the childrens hands and faces.
Tara watches quietly as Laila cleans Gracies sticky hands and Stoney scoops up Tomas and carries him into the bedroom. Tomas squeals with joy, happy to rough house with his papan. Alise is finishing up cleaning the kitchen table when the phone rings. Laila sees Alises face lose its smile and go pale.
“Rowan... Yes, he is awake. Oh no... mon Dieu...Yes, I will send him...”
Alise hangs up and races to the bedroom where Stoney is changing Tomas. “Chiot. There is a problem. You must fly to Stars and bring her to the Manse, Rowan will meet you there. Hurry, she says it may mean life or death for the little one. They are in the woods, north of the cabin but not as far as the clearing.”
Stoney hands Tomas to his mother and is out the door and in the air within seconds.
