"Thea, if you will call us a cab… we need to get to the airport."
"Lord Adrian." Ramji stands, sketches a bow in Adrian's direction. "It would please me if you would allow me to drive you."
"I would not impose upon you, young man."
"It is no imposition, my lord, and it would allow Laila some little time more with her sister."
Now Adrian smiles. "My thanks for your generous offer, Rider. I accept, for Thea and myself." Thea says nothing, but her smile speaks volumes.
Adrian sits up front with Ramji, leaving the back seat for the sisters. They chatter like magpies on the way, and it seems no time till they pull up onto the tarmac.
At the gate, the sisters embrace; then Adrian takes Laila aside and presses some folded bills into her hand.
"You have earned far more than this, even if I discount what you have endured at Stefan's hands. Nay, take it; I will brook no refusal.
Before we must go, a word in your private ear. The cell phone Thea has given you has two pre-programmed numbers in it. The first is for ordinary calls to your sister. Fret not about the charges; the account will be sent to me.
The second number is for emergencies only and is clearly marked as such. Should Stefan cause you any further trouble, do not hesitate to call that number and I will return and deal with him. Promise me that you will not fail to call should such a thing occur."
"I do so promise, Lord Adrian."
The vampire lord bows his head. "My thanks, Laila. May the gods bless you, and your young man. Be happy."
Then he turns away and motions to Thea. Thea gives her sister one last hug before moving to join her employer, and together they pass through the gate.
