A few minutes later Thea and Star descend the stairs with boxes in hand. Star carries a smaller one containing a few keepsakes and jewelry that their parents had left for Laila.
Lord Adrian stands, recognizing the larger box that Thea was carrying. “Thea. Isnt that the box from the seamstress with your new clothing for the year?”
Thea bows her head. “It is my Lord. And you are most generous to those that serve you. But my sister has been many years with nothing new so I thought to give her my annual allowance for clothing. I can go a couple of years with nothing new, it will not hurt me.”
Adrian nods, “As you will, Thea.” and he smiles to himself, I will have to remember to speak with the seamstress when we return...
When they enter the back room Star sees the pained look on Lailas face and immediately sets the box down and goes to her. Rowan is finished and searching through her kit for the ointment she has been using.
Star takes the hand and places it on top of hers. “Let me try something...”
Little by little Laila can feel the pain lessening. 'How... how did you do that? It feels like it did before... just an aching pain, nothing more...”
“I dont really know and many times it does not work... or I cant seem to make it work... I'm not sure. But I am glad your hand isnt so bad.” Star grins at her friend and at the surprised look on Ramjis face.
Lailas attention turns to Thea, who is taking clothing out of the larger box and shaking them.
“Thea, you dont have to give me all your clothes. Its too much..” Tears threaten to fall again, but Laila holds them back.
“These arent all my clothes. I have plenty back home. My Lord treats his servants every year to new clothing, as well as books and other items. It is how you should have been treated. I will never forgive myself for not checking sooner... much sooner....”
The sisters hug one another. Thea pushes Lailas hair away from her face, “Father always teased you about your unruly hair, but now its gorgeous. Lets pick out something for you to wear so you can take those blood stained things off.”
Rowan and Ramji exchange a smile as they watch Laila tentatively look through the skirts, blouses and even a couple of sundresses. Laila takes a deep breath, “This is so pretty. I have never worn anything like it.”
Ramji whispers, “The simplest of dresses makes her so happy.”
Rowan nods, “I know. But I think things are going to get much, much better for her from now on.”
