All is quiet, though not unnaturally so, when I arrive at the Tavern. I come in the back door by way of precaution, Monty admitting me after one long hard look. The demifae verify my identity, then scatter as though I come bearing insect spray. Monty leads me to the room where Alise and her family have taken shelter.

"Milady Alise," I say, going to one knee to kiss her hand. "How fare you this evening?" Her response is gracious as ever, but a little distracted; the worry for her children, and those of others, shows in her face.

"Fear nothing, milady." I rise to my feet. "I am here to reinforce the wards on this place. Should the beast attempt entrance here tonight, she will regret it for the rest of her life - which will not be long in any case. There are too many who yearn for the sight of her blood, and they will not be denied."
